Four Big Red One staff sergeants joined the esteemed ranks of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club while nine Army spouses received the Dr. Mary E. Walker Award June 10 at Patton Hall.
Staff Sgt. Mathew Carson and Staff Sgt. Jose Quinones, both of 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment and Staff Sgt. Tyler Fernlund and Staff Sgt. Charles Howard, both of 4th Squadron , 4th Cavalry Regiment, were each happy and honored to be inducted into the Armywide club.
Each noncommissioned officer was presented with a silver medallion about two inches in diameter during the ceremony, which hung suspended by a broad powder-blue ribbon, representing the traditional color of the infantry.
Command Sgt. Maj. Darrell Wallace, command sergeant major, 1st Infantry Division-rear, couldn’t be happier with the four Soldiers who joined the ranks of other Fort Riley SAMC members.
“There is great value in having these guys in your formation. When you need something researched, you got the Audie Murphy guy. When you need something done, you grab that Audie Murphy guy. When you’re not sure about something, you grab that Audie Murphy guy,” Wallace said.
Members aim to emulate the club’s namesake, Staff Sgt. Audie Murphy, the most decorated American Soldier of World War II during his 27 months in action in the European Theatre.
“It feels great,” Fernlund stated.
“A lot of the senior NCOs that I looked up to in the past were Sergeant Audie Murphy Club members,” Carson added. “This is an excellent opportunity for (me) to be more like those NCOs.”
Alongside the new inductees were Nicole Carroll, Joanna Conley, Denise Corey, Christie Henning, Guin Lewis, Debra Smith, Laura Snyder, Rozine Tressider and Stefanie VanWagenen receiving the Dr. Mary E Walker award – an award for Army spouses whose achievements and performance merit special recognition.
“I feel honored,” Corey stated, explaining that she felt immense pride in receiving the award and looks forward to helping and giving advice to any other spouse that requires it. “It feels good.”
