The Office of The Judge Advocate General is now accepting applications for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program.  Under this program, the Army projects sending up to 25 active-duty commissioned officers to law school at government expense. Selected officers will attend law school beginning the fall of 2011 and will remain on active-duty while attending law school.

Interested officers should review Chapter 14, AR 27-1 (The Judge Advocate General’s Funded Legal Education Program) to determine their eligibility.  This program is open to commissioned officers in the rank of second lieutenant through captain. Applicants must have at least two but not more than six years of total active Federal service at the time legal training begins.

Eligible officers interested in applying should immediately register for their earliest offering of the Law School Admission Test. Applicants must send their request through command channels, to include the officer’s branch manager at AHRC, with a copy furnished to the Office of The Judge Advocate General, ATTN:  DAJA-PT (Ms. Yvonne Caron - 10th Floor), 1777 North Kent Street, Rosslyn, VA 22209-2194, to be received before Nov. 1. Submission of the application well in advance of the deadline is advised.

For the second year in a row, Grantham University, an online university serving working adult students around the world for nearly 60 years, has partnered with the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Association of the United States Army to provide one full, four-year scholarship to an NCO and one full, four-year scholarship to the spouse of an NCO. The scholarships cover tuition costs for an undergraduate or graduate degree, required textbooks, software, fees and shipping of course materials. The value of each scholarship is about $36,000.

The deadline for applications is Aug. 31. Applicants must be from the communities of Kansas City, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Riley or Topeka. Visit www.grantham.edu/ausa-nco for an application.

First Street at the intersection of A and B streets in the Camp Funston area will be closed until Aug. 14 due to construction.

Due to construction on Moon Lake Dam, the road across from the dam will be closed. The road is expected to be closed for 90 days or until Oct. 24. Access to the North picnic shelter or the East side of the lake will be by the foot bridge on the North end of Moon Lake. These areas will not be able to be accessed by vehicle until work is completed and the road reopened.

Army Community Service will host its first Cell Phone Scavenger Hunt from Aug. 7 to 14. The HIRED! Program, Parents 2 Parents, and Army Community Service are hosting a financial management workshop and workforce preparation workshop. These workshops are prerequisites for participating in the HIRED! Program, but they are open to all Fort Riley youth. The financial management workshop is a basic financial workshop, geared towards youth. The workforce preparation workshop includes resume writing, interviewing skills and dress for success.

During the week of July 19, Unified School District 475 Child Nutrition and Enrollment Fee packets were mailed to all returning USD 475 students who were pre-registered last spring and to any new middle or high school students who enrolled in June or early July. Enrollment fees and food-service payments should be made payable and returned to each child’s school in order to complete enrollment for 2010-11.  Elementary school offices will be open beginning July 28 to received payments.

A Mud Volleyball Tournament is being planned. The tournament is open to both females and males who are 18 years of age or older and are active duty, Family members, retirees, Department of Defense contractors, or AAFES employees at Fort Riley. The registration deadline is 4:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the King Field House sports office.

Fort Riley Teen Center will be hosting a Water Sports Camp for Teens Aug. 2 to 6 for students in grades 6 through 12. The camp includes instruction on water safety with canoeing and kayaking, a river trip with canoes and kayaks, water skiing and tubing and a trip to Oceans of Fun. The camp will typically run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day, except on the day where attendees travel to Oceans of Fun. There will be an additional cost for this camp. The Custer Hill Golf Course will host Get Golf Ready, a five-day clinic from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Aug. 2-7. Participants will learn orientation, history, etiquette, set-up, grip, stance and aim. Aug. 14 has been scheduled for a fun shoot at the Fort Riley Outdoorsmen Group Archery Range. All 40 3-D targets will be set up for the fun shoot.  All 40 targets will not always be set up at the range to save them from weathering over the summer months. Correction: In the Aug. 27 1st Infantry Division Post Elizabeth Henkemeyer was listed in a story, “Working at IACH has become Family affairs for many employees” as being a practical nurse. Her actual title is emergency department board certified family nurse practitioner. Also, the Henkemeyers said they didn’t get to see their Families much because of Marco’s 23-year Air Force career not Army.

Fort Riley’s annual Customer Service Assessment is available online at www.mymilitaryvoice.org until Sept. 26. The assessment collects feedback from leaders, Soldiers, Family members, civilians, retirees and veterans on the delivery of garrison services.

Since Aug. 23, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a survey in the Sherman Heights area located just north Colyer Manor. Residents may see teams and vehicles related to this project in the area. The project is expected to last three months. In the past, the Sherman Heights was used for training. Because of this, the Corps of Engineers conducts routine surveys for old munitions to ensure that the area remains safe. Catholic Religious Education classes begin Sept. 12.  Most classes for Kindergarten through high school will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Sunday at Morris Hill Chapel. This includes sacramental preparation for children and teens – baptism, Eucharist, confirmation – and ongoing faith formation. 

RCIA:  Rite of Christian Initiation is for adults interested in becoming Catholic or in learning more about the Catholic faith and way of life.

The schedule at Fort Riley is flexible to meet the needs of Soldiers and their Families. This group meets Sunday mornings and other scheduled times to meet Soldier needs.

Catholic Youth Ministry: Middle and High School students are invited to message and mission: an opportunity to grow as disciples of Jesus through community service, fun activities and ministry.

Baptism Preparation for Parents and Godparents: classes meets once a month as needed.

The Resilient Spouse Academy will take place Sept. 13 to 17 and Oct. 18 to 22. This is a five-day training and will take place at the ACS Annex, 1020 Huebner Rd. Child care is available, and if you have children in school CDC will make arrangements to pick your child up from school if you attend this training.

The training includes ASIST suicide prevention (16 hours), Master Resilience (8 hours), response to violence (2 hours) and financial readiness training (14 hours). The Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley needs volunteers to help bake 2,000 apple pies for the upcoming Fall Apple Day. Pies will be made Sept. 13 to 17. Fort Riley will provide a free Fort Riley Hunting Access Permit weekend for all individuals Sept. 4 to 6, to coincide with the opening weekend of dove season and the Labor Day holiday.

Individuals hunting this season at Fort Riley will still be required to have all state license and permit requirements met.

The Fort Riley Outdoorsmen Group will sponsor its first dove hunt in conjunction with the free Fort Riley Hunting Access Permit Weekend Sept. 4.

The Combined Federal Campaign Golf Tournament will be Sept. 17 at Custer Hill Golf Course. Registration and sign in for the four-person scramble will begin at 9 a.m., and play will kickoff at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start. Youth may self-register for the Open Recreation program at the Fort Riley Middle School Teen Center. Teens can come to the teen center and pick up a two-page packet for their parents to fill out and bring back to the center to start using services.

This is a new opportunity for youth and parents, who may not have the time to set up an appointment at Bldg. 6620.

Registration and use of the building during open recreation times is free. Open recreation times are after school during the school year; at 1 p.m. when school is out; and from 2 to 11 p.m. Saturdays. Transportation from Fort Riley Middle School, Junction City Middle School and Junction City High School is free, but a parent permission slip is needed.

The Fort Riley Automotive Skills Center Car Club is accepting applications for annual membership. The Custer Hill Golf Course Driving Range is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After hours, an automatic ball dispenser, located on the back side of the club house, is available. Event: 8th Annual Kansas City Irish Fest

Where: Crown Center

Commemorate Kansas City’s Celtic heritage with three days of music, dancing and exhibits. The festival will feature more than 30 locally and nationally known bands, playing traditional music and Celtic rock.
